Redrock Day 4
This will likely be my last walkabout. Common sense says that an old man like me should not be wandering around alone for days in the wilderness. I spent this 4th day of my redrock walkabout taking in some of the tourist sites in Buckhorn Wash, including some impressive ancient rock art, some interesting man-made caves, and even a petrified dinosaur footprint.

Redrock Walkabout - Day 3
Просмотров 682 года назад
After a hard second day, I decided to sleep in a bit and then wander up a much easier side canyon on Day 3. While exploring a big sandstone alcove I discovered a pair of petroglyph spirals that made me reflect on the people that used to occupy this land long before European explorers arrived.

The hike down Little Holes Canyon was a little more challenging than I'd expected. I was glad I had rappelling gear and wading shoes. According to the scant information I was able to find ahead of time, Little Holes is rated as a Class 2 slot canyon. But, I'd say it's a little under-rated especially if you're 70 years old and carrying a bulky heavy pack. Watch out for rattlesnakes too.
Redrock Walkabout - Day 2 AM

On the morning of the second day I hiked up Furniture Draw, and then along the Old Spanish Trail to the head of Little Holes Canyon where I had planned to camp for the night. But, the pond I was counting on for water there had dried up, so I decided to continue on.

Grandpa Mountain Walkabout - Day 2
Просмотров 1603 года назад
I'm sure some people wonder why I post these walkabout videos. Most contain little or no unique information that experienced backcountry campers would find useful. And often they tend to be pretty boring. The answer is, I make them for my grandchildren. It won't be too many more years before I'm too old to go backpacking, and so my youngest grandkids will never get to go backcountry camping wit...
Grandpa Mountain Walkabout - Day 1

There is a mountain in southeastern Idaho named after my maternal grandfather. I had never been to its summit, so I decided to make it the goal of this walkabout. I'm not getting any younger, and who knows when I'll get too old to be climbing mountains by myself. So, this is the year I decided to do it.
"Bowcasting" and Other Novel Ways to Place a Setline
Просмотров 1883 года назад
Lake fishing with a setline can be a very effective and efficient method for obtaining food in a survival situation. However, without a boat it can sometimes be difficult to get baited hooks far enough out from shore to reach the fish. In this video I demonstrate a few simple techniques that can greatly increase the distance I'm able to launch my setline.
Starting fire with a broken ferro rod

What if your ferro rod breaks or wears down to the point where it's too small to hold securely with your fingers? Seating it in a piece of wood can make an otherwise useless ferro rod usable again.
Checking My Old Walkabout Shelter
Просмотров 5893 года назад
I built a primitive log shelter nearly 2 years ago and used it last winter during a walkabout. This winter I was curious to see if it might still be there, and what condition would be in. So I snowshoed in to check it out.

nope. you need to have the entrance below the floor of the igloo. warm air rises. you'll be just as cold as outside.

When we build igloos we trim the first ring of blocks so the height start at zero and ends at 1 block height at a full circle. Then you always have a supporting block building in a spiral. The edge of the block is trimmed not to the centrum, but at an angle. In this way the next block gets better support from the previous. When getting close to the top, one may find it more effective to mount 3 blocks as an arch over the top and then fill inn the missing parts. Building the igloo a bit pointed to the top also makes it sturdier and easier to make stand under construction.

You don't set the last block in the first circle higher than the rest, you cut the top of it at an angle which starts the angle at which the rest of the blocks follow as they spiral up. There aren't X layers, it's just one spiral. This, if done correctly, ensures that every block going up has ample support against the other blocks.

Hi I am really enjoying the videos. I was wondering what the purpose of the stone fireplace is? I was thinking about ways to reduce smoke in the face and was wondering whether that helped?

    • @overthehilloutdoors6779
      @overthehilloutdoors6779 Год назад

A horseshoe-shaped fire ring blocks wind coming from the back and sides, and reflects heat toward the open front. It also acts like a crude rocket stove, drawing air from the low front and sending smoke up and over the higher back wall. Hot rocks retain heat long after the fire goes out, so I sometimes put 1 or 2 warm ones inside my shelter or sleeping bag on cold nights.

@@overthehilloutdoors6779 thank you for the answer! I struggle finding rocks in the woods that I go to. Would a similar construction from wood do the job? I really aspire to do what you are doing.

    • @overthehilloutdoors6779

I think wood could work, but you'd have to keep the fire small. An earthen structure might be better.

If you want to increase it's efficiency you should have your sleeping area slightly elevated. The cold air will drop into the low points and the sleeping area will accumulate heat much much faster.
